October 13

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Unfortunately I am not with you all today.  I hope that you are all doing well and having a good day today!  There are two main things that you will be working on today in my absence.  First you will be reviewing a PPT slideshow and taking notes on your own.  Second you will be working on our Court Cartographer Project, where you will be free hand drawing a map of an imaginary island.  This is a fun artistic activity and I hope that you enjoy it!  There is a superb example of a map on the wall in the corner.  Sorry I missed you all today.  I look forward to seeing you all again soon!  Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.

Objectives:
  1. Discuss a history of map making with an emphasis on answering questions related to the content
  2. Read and annotate a unique story from a fictional explorer and create a map based on the information provided
Agenda:
  1. Turn in Time Zone Project if you did not finish and turn in on Tuesday
  2. History Today #15
  3. Discuss/Review: A History of Map Making
    1. Access Today's PPT
    2. On a Separate piece of paper take notes on the following items.  Be sure you understand these concepts well as there will be a quiz on these topics in the next week
      1. Map Basics
        1. What are the three basic types of Maps?
        2. Sketch an example of each
      2. Map terms to know --> Create a chart and define the map terms in it
        1. These vocabulary terms will appear on the quiz!
      3. Early Map Making
        1. What is a cartographer?
        2. Who were Aristotle and Eratosthenes?
        3. Who was Ptolemy and why was he important?
        4. What became less important during the Middle Ages?
        5. What two types of maps became common during the Middle Ages?
      4. Age of Exploration
        1. Explain what makes Christopher Columbus important to history?
        2. Why is there controversy over glorifying Columbus?
        3. Do you think it is ok to celebrate Columbus Day?  Why or why not?

        1. Explain what makes Ferdinand Magellan important to history?
        2. Did Magellan actually make it around the world?
        3. What are the similarities and differences between Magellan and Columbus?

        1. Create a chart and explain the role and significance of each Tool

    3. You will be provided a piece of blank paper with a grid on it --> you ARE NOT REQUIRED to use this paper.  You may use a completely blank paper or you may use another material altogether
      1. Extra Credit for those who go above and beyond the requirements of the map
        1. Extra creativity and imagination on display
              1. Annotated Story (10 Points)
                1. You are required to read and annotate the explorer's account in order to identify the features that he is describing
                  1. Latitude and Longitude Lines
                  2. Landforms described (name them(

                  4. The Path traveled by the Explorer (list this path with a Key identification color line)
              2. Map Design (50 Points)
                1. Follow the requirements on the worksheet
                2. Use rulers to help provide scale
                3. At least 1 rough draft of your map
                4. Due Date is Next Thursday (October 20)
    4. I will review the Court Cartographer project with you when I return :)
