March 30 - Mapping Monday #7

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome Back! Hopefully everyone has had an opportunity to rest up a bit and stay safe"sheltering in place." I realize we are not in the same classroom face to face but we will continue to work with one another throughout this time away. I for one am super excited about getting back to working with each of you.

To start, I'd like to ask that you log into Google Classroom each day as if you were still physically at school. Additionally,  you should be working on a particular school subject during the normally scheduled time slot (To the best of your ability). Since I see all my classes on a slightly different schedule I am going to use a Monday, Wednesday, Friday post schedule.  That means you should look for new lessons on each of those days!  You will work on World Cultures related assignments, readings, projects, studying, etc... during that time period. I am not planning on hosting 'live' Zoom or Webex full class attendance sessions so I won't be monitoring any attendance. It's not mandatory that you log on during the exact class time frame but it is strongly recommended. Each regularly scheduled class period I will have a posting in Google Classroom providing you instructions for what we will be doing that day as well as what you will be expected to complete for that class period and any homework or extended assignment(s). I will be online and available for questions during those times. Just as if we were in school, assignments will typically be due the very next class (unless otherwise instructed). I will attach slides in each day's post that will cover our Objectives, Agenda, and any Classwork/Homework similar to when we were meeting 'in-person'. Periodically I will create a recording of myself giving instructions, a lecture, or explaining an assignment and posting it within the day's google classroom post.  Please always view these videos in their entirety as they should provide detailed clarification for what's expected.  To get things started I have a recording for you attached to this post. It is of me walking through the attached slides and covering our Distance Learning Expectations and of our South African unit calendar for the week.  Again, Welcome Back & Please let me know if you have any questions.

Objectives:
  1. Locate and identify political and physical features of Latin America
  2. Research and summarize a current event from Latin America
Agenda:
  1. Mapping Monday
Homework:
  1. Current Event #9 due TONIGHT (Event from Latin America)
    1. Current Event Mapping Instructions
      1. Add CE #9 to the same map you did CE #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
  2. Latin America Map test (TBD)
    1. Latin America Countries Quiz (Test prep)
    2. Latin America Physical Features Quiz (Test Prep) (make sure to customize)
That's all for the day folks!   Hope that you are all doing well, staying safe, and sheltering in place!  Take care and have a great rest of your day!

    Live long and prosper,

    Mr. Marchetti

    Check Google Classroom

    Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I have received word today from SJUSD that we will begin remote instruction in the coming days/week(s). I am working on putting together a plan of action and a calendar for the work that we'll be doing. I will be publishing that on google classroom site in the coming days. I will be recording videos of the day's lessons and then posting them on Classroom for you to view and take action. (still to be determined on that) There are still many questions that I have for the District that they are unable to clarify at this moment but what I do know is that we will be picking up and continuing our World Cultures teaching and learning sooner rather than later.

I realize that everyone has different circumstances at home when it comes to access to laptops, PCs, Chromebooks, internet connectivity, printers, scanners, etc.. But I do know that most everyone has a cellphone and that you can access google classroom from your phones.

What I'd like to ask from each of you is to respond to the post on Google Classroom in the comments section that you have received this communication and confirm that you will be checking the site on a daily basis.

Once I have a more structured plan in place I will be communicating with you, and expecting a response, on our normal meeting days/times. Look forward to hearing from you all.

    Live long and prosper

    Update

    Hello ladies and gentlemen,

I hope that everyone had a good first week of closure/shelter in place. As of now it looks like we will be out of school longer than expected. That has a couple of impacts on us.
First - until we are told otherwise do not worry about doing any school work over the break. Officially we are not allowed to be doing any distance teaching at this time. That is likely to change if our closure extends longer than expected.
Second - if we are instructed to do distance/online teaching then we will use Google Classroom as our primary tool to provide instruction, do assignments, and give feedback. If the closure extends for a long time then this will be very important to continue teaching and assessing. It will also be an important component to ensuring that your classes/grades count for this semester.

As I learn more information I will provide updates but as of now just do your best to exercise self care and stay safe. If you want to continue learning on your own then my best recommendation is that you work on your maps. You have your Latin America Maps and can access the Asia maps via the blog.

I hope that we will be able to come together again soon but until then take care!

    Live long and prosper,

    Mr. Marchetti

    Work Update

    Hello ladies and gentlemen,

As I am sure you have all heard by now we are closed for the next three weeks.  There is a slim possibility of the school being reopened earlier but I seriously doubt that will happen.  Per district directives we cannot assign work over this period at this point (this could change and I strongly recommend you check my blog and Google Classroom for updates).  For right now here is what this closure means for upcoming work assignments:

    1. All physical work assignments (Maps, tests, in class assignments) are postponed until school resumes.
      1. When I have an updated calendar I will share it so once again CHECK BACK HERE FREQUENTLY!
    2. All currently assigned digital work (Current Event #9) is being postponed until Monday April 6 (the Monday when school resumes)
    3. I may be posting videos and study guides over the course of the break
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me over the course of the next three weeks.  I cannot guarantee an immediate response but I will get back to you as soon as I can.

This is an unfortunate necessity based on the current state of affairs.  I strongly encourage you to use this time to rest and recharge, also practice your best hygiene to avoid any possible contamination.

I will truly miss all you amazing people and hope that you are able to stay safe over the next three weeks.  Take care.

    Live long and prosper,

    Mr. Marchetti
